Our History
Our organization begin in 1995 as the Worldwide
Fund for Mothers Injured in Childbirth. In 2003, the name
was changed to Worldwide Fistula Fund.
Some of our past activities include:
Construction of the
Evangel VVF Centre, Jos,
Nigeria: This center is located at a busy general hospital in
north-central Nigeria. Between 300 and 400 women receive
life-changing VVF surgery at this center annually.
The Mercy Maternity and Fistula Center,
Mankessim, Ghana. After years of work, this new Center is to
open in 2006. provided operating room equipment (operating
tables and monitors), surgical instruments, consulting visits, even
advice on architecture.
The Aberdeen Clinic and Fistula Center,
Freetown, Sierra Leone opened in May 2005. provided
instruments, computer equipment, funds for surgery, and on-site
consulting. The ACFC has already done several hundred VVF
repairs.
The Addis Ababa Fistula Hospital, Addis
Ababa , Ethiopia has received computer support and operational
funding from .
has actively assisted in VVF activities of the
International Continence Society, sponsoring publications and
a major international seminar on VVF. We have collaborated
extensively with the University of Ghana Medical School, and
have been involved in training surgeons in Ghana, Liberia, Nigeria,
and Ethiopia. We are currently involved in the production of
training manuals, and have multiple publications in medical journals
and textbooks, national magazines, and local media.
We have provided invited expert consultation to
President Olusegun Obasanjo of Nigeria, to the United Nations
Population Fund, World Health Organization, the United States
Congress, a variety of media outlets including ABC and BBC
television, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the
Gates Institute of the School of Public Health, Johns Hopkins
University.
We are also sponsors of Engel Entertainment's
"Walk to Beautiful", a stunningly beautiful film about obstetric
